Planning the perfect hens party
Generally the maid of honour and bridesmaids plan the hens day in honour of the bride to be. Often a hens day will begin at the home of someone in the wedding party or vice versa then there is a trip to a venue such as a winery, activity or bar (of course)! It’s important that the wedding party work in harmony together for the sake of the bride and keep thinking about her needs before theirs.
It’s important to start planning for the hens day at least 3-6 months before the wedding. Most commonly the hens day is held 2-6 weeks prior to the wedding unless on a destination wedding where it can be just a couple of days before. You should give your guests at least 6 weeks notice and send the invitation out via email or post. A great and popular tool for hens day invites is Paperless Post.
Work on a theme
Start with a theme and then select a venue around the theme. Ie. if the bride loves the beach - why not arrange a venue near the sea. Or if she is a lover of wine then a winery is sure to be a great option. Hens party themes are a lot of fun, and no matter the personality and style of the hen in question, there are so many themes to choose from.
Create a checklist and delegate
Make sure nothing gets forgotten or left out, and think about all aspects of the hens day such as:
• Gift for bride
And then delegate the tasks! Once your theme, date and venue it’s important to delegate tasks amongst the bridal party. This way everyone has a clear role and many hands make small work?
Who to invite to your hens party
Ask the bride who SHE wants to invite on her hens day. On average most hens days are 15-25 guests. Before you set the venue ensure you set the invite list to know that it will work with your numbers. Ask the bride to send a list of who she would like included. Generally the mother of the bride and groom attend - along with a couple of close family friends and of course her bffs.
Make sure you get your hens party invitations out early enough, to give all your invited guests enough time to respond and fit the event into their schedule’s. Have a clear RSVP on the invite so there’s no confusion about the final guest list.
The decision of whether to invite people who aren’t invited to the wedding can depend on the size of wedding you are having, if the wedding itself is quite small you might want to invite more people along to your hens party. If you are eloping and still want to celebrate your last single days with your pals then sure, invite people who aren’t invited to the wedding. There is no right answer, it’s completely the bride’s choice as to who gets an invite.

It will depend on what kind of hen’s party you have planned as to the type of venue you might consider. These are easy to have a home games, but you could also hire some entertainment, like photo booths or a karaoke machine.
Have some fun with your hens party food
Play on the fact there is a wedding about to happen! Have fun with food and fill it with the theme of love, think heart shaped food, specialised cookies and pink cocktails.
If the venue allows for it, a hen’s is a great opportunity to add a cake or dessert table and personalise the food as much as possible to the theme and the bride to be.
If you are having the hens party at home, think about who will do the food, a friend or family or family might be happy to do it, but it’s totally up to you on the kind of food you want. You can bring in a caterer to make life easy (but this will be a little more expensive) or it’s lovely to add a personal touch - the mother of the bride and bridal party to make the hen her favourite dishes. This adds a sentimental touch.
