Meet the team behind LENZO on International Women’s Day

It’s International Women’s Day today, and at LENZO HQ, we’re celebrating our personal and professional achievements! Being an all-female team here, this movement is especially close to our hearts.

So, we thought today would be the perfect opportunity for you to meet the girls behind your favourite party brand…

1. What was your first job out of university?

I studied a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing Major) at the University of Adelaide and after completion, I still didn't know what I truly wanted to do! I then saw an ad online for a postgrad Media Sales course with the opportunity to gain employment after completion - so I packed my bags and moved to Melbourne. I was then employed at Bauer Media (formerly ACP Magazines in its heyday) in the advertising department. I stayed there until I decided to launch LENZO.

2. How would you describe the concept of LENZO to a child?

A party wonderland where you can find your favourite products and services to bring the event of your dreams to life.

3. What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

As a Mum, Daughter, Sister, Worker, Juggler  - it's a day to celebrate progress. There is still a long way before we live in a truly balanced society but I believe we should also celebrate the success of how far we've come.

4. At what precise moment did you know that LENZO was going to be such a success?

From the beginning I knew there was a gap in the market - there were directories within the event space but nowhere you could shop products and services in the one destination. As our social media following grew I knew that we had something really special.

5. Who inspires you and why?

Turia Pitt. She is such a go-getter.... truly remarkable. She reminds me to live the most out of every moment.

1. Which A-list celebrity’s event would you love to style?

I'd LOVEEEEEE to style any event for Victoria Beckham! She's such a power woman! I mean, who didn't love her when she was Posh Spice?!

2. What’s a party rule you’d never break?

Don’t be boring! It’s not a party without 1. flowers and 2. personalised decor! Flowers add such a beautiful touch to anything – they’re fresh, pretty, and the finishing touch to any backdrop! As for personalised décor, it's all about the finer details for me, like acrylic drink stirrers and signage.

3. What’s been your biggest achievement working at LENZO?

I’d have to say starting at LENZO as an intern, and then working my way up to my role now. Elleni has been such a brilliant friend, co-worker and #BOSSLADY. I also have to add that I've worked across many brands and activations, and it’s so rewarding seeing clients thrilled with the outcome of the event that I’ve worked on from start to finish.

4. What skills did you acquire from previous roles that helped you manage this one?

I've worked previously across a few different roles: hospitality, office assistant for a barrister, retail, and sales & production roles. It sounds silly, but learning how to word emails and talk eloquently on the phone to clients / customers are the absolute prerequisites for me! It's all the little things you learn that really establishes how you carry yourself and come across to your customers and clients.

5. Who inspires you and why?

I have to say my mum! She came from Vietnam to Australia by boat in the late 1970's with absolutely nothing, and has worked herself from the ground up. She's taught me so many life lessons: how to cook, how to appreciate, how to be strong. She had a pretty tough year in 2018 after having brain surgery - it's been 5 months now and she's done a full 360 and kicking on like nobody’s business!

1. What’s a styling element you would love to see incorporated into more events?

I'm currently obsessed with anything that has a 1980's vibe to it. Furniture (the new Dann Event range is EPIC), graphics, florals - I'm in LOVE!! I feel like it also adds an extra sense of old school fun to any event ... plus it's super cool!

2. What’s your biggest challenge in your role?

Probably trying to fit all of my concepts into a budget ... we always get there in the end but it's hard letting go of something that you know will look amazing in the setting!

3. If you had an unlimited budget, what kind of party would you throw?

Ooh that’s a tough one ... I would love to say my own (haha) but I think I would love to create the PERFECT wedding / reception for my parents (who are still engaged after a zillion years). That would be pretty amazing!

4. How does graphic design and event styling complement each other?

In so many ways! I feel like it's a huge advantage to be able to come up with a concept and then have the ability to create the artwork to ensure that all elements are consistent, from an overarching font choice to a colour scheme.

5. Who inspires you and why?

I'm constantly inspired by the amazing work of Yan Yan Chan (@_yanyanchan) who creates the most BEAUTIFUL content I have ever seen. I'm in love with how she is never afraid to take risks or bend the 'rules' of fashion and styling.

1. Besides LENZO, what’s your favourite Instagram account?

Any that I can enter a competition..... I'm a sucker for an IG competition! I really LOVE following @fshnbnkr because they constantly have engaging stories :)

2. What’s your top Instagram tip for engagement?

Make your posts interactive! Ask your customers what they want to see - and then deliver it! It's the best (and often the easiest) way to ensure you are on the same wavelength as your customers.

3. What’s your favourite part about working at LENZO?

The girls I work with! I'm so lucky to work in such an incredible (#ALLGIRLS) team - who are lots of fun, but also extremely driven and amazing at their jobs.

4. How are sales and social media connected?

Social media is the basis of the industry we are in! LENZO has a very strong social pull, so we advertise our premium suppliers on our Instagram/Facebook to bring attention to their brand. If someone sees what they like, they can order/buy; if they don't like it, they just keep on scrolling :)

5. Who inspires you and why?

My big sister Zelda (I mean, who doesn’t look up to their older sibling?) I’ve always admired her independence – she relocated her entire life to rural NSW for an amazing career opportunity! I’ve also strived to match her amazing achievements, which is unfortunate for her, as I’m a bit competitive like that (although I can’t imagine living in the country anytime soon!)

1. What book do you wish you’d written?

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. I remember the joy of reading that book in primary school, and feeling like I had lost a friend when I closed the cover. It’s brilliantly written, the concept is incredible, and the storyline is timeless.

2. What famous author would you love to swap writing tips with?

William Shakespeare – the man was a damn literary genius. Did you know he introduced over 1700 words and phrases into the English language? If you’ve ever said, “Love is blind,” or “Kill [them] with kindness,” you can thank William (first-name basis) for those ones – and many more! I’m fangirling so hard right now!

3. What did you study at university to get this role?

I completed a double major in English and History – nothing fancy – at Monash University. That was more for my own enjoyment than me thinking about a potential career path. Those 3000-word essays certainly helped finesse my writing skills! As for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), I learnt about that on the job in my first junior role. I’d have to say I’m pretty grateful that my passion is also my bread and butter.

4. What advice do you want to give to future content writers and bloggers?

In the wise words of the wonderful Stephen King, “If you want to be a good writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” It’s not enough to have a passion for writing – you have to be able to back it up with excellent grammar and punctuation. Nobody wants to read a blog that’s filled with spelling errors, no matter how interesting the topic might be!

5. Who inspires you and why?

Cleopatra. She’s the ultimate #QUEEN – literally. As the sole ruler of all of ancient Egypt for almost three decades, she was the epitome of both brains and beauty. To this day, I think we can all learn a thing or two about her charismatic leadership style, diplomatic approaches, and how to make it in a man’s world.
