A jaw-dropping sneaky wedding surprise in Byron Bay
We think we can all agree that the only thing more exciting than a wedding… is a surprise wedding!
With the help of a handpicked collection of talented event professionals, we said goodbye to tradition and decided to pull off an engagement party turned surprise wedding for our latest LENZO editorial. We won’t lie: this type of event requires expert-level, under-the-radar planning that would rival any Secret Intelligence Service. After all, only the key participants would be privy to the unfolding of the day’s events - and having a professional photographer on hand to capture every wide-eyed sigh and look of overjoy is a big task that you can’t leave to just anybody.
Captured by the ever-impressive Figtree Pictures and hosted in one of Australia’s most beloved destinations, Byron Bay, an engagement slash surprise wedding is perfect for all those brides-to-be looking to add an element of surprise at their milestone occasion.
With its magical combination of luscious greenery and relaxed beachside atmosphere, it’s hard not to see why Fig Tree Restaurant in Byron Bay is the ultimate place to host an engagement party turned surprise wedding. Planning an extravagant ceremony in the next few months and dreading all that family involvement? This might sway you to try something more romantic and intimate…
Imagine being invited to an engagement party and arriving to see this beautiful ceremony setup! This setting was brought together by he stand out florals by Beautiflora and furniture and props by The Wedding Shed. The giant white Mediterranean-styled vases were filled with a mixture of dried plants and fresh blossoms, and were enhanced by the pillar candles that were displayed around the bases. It’s the perfect blend of luxe and romantic as the bride walks up the aisle to meet her groom!
Our bride was effortlessly styled from head to toe in two gorgeous and timeless wedding gowns from boho babe Grace Loves Lace, with shoes by Bared Footwear (who else?) to complement the distinct styles. We especially love the pop of coral that peeped from under one of the dresses! The finishing touches to each gown was topped off with fine handcrafted rings, necklaces, and earrings by Chloe McColl Jewellery.
Of course, our dashing groom was also spoilt by getting styled in three tailored suits by Institchu. His contemporary looks were also complemented with brown leather shoes by Bared Footwear.
Now that the formalities are out of the way, it’s time to party! We hired a caravan photo booth from Frankie and Mavis, and invited our newlyweds to pose and pout in front of the camera with their fun props. We love that the images can be printed and collected immediately – what a beautiful and thoughtful keepsake for your guests!
We set up a banquet-style lunch, where guests sat down in a casual and relaxed atmosphere to engage in conversation and canapes. We incorporated a blend of different textures to create a jaw-dropping tablescape: the rattan placemats teamed with blush linen and stunning fresh floral displays helped create a cohesive sensory overload. Did you spot that gorgeous white palm leaf amongst the centrepieces? It’s our fave!
For those extra LENZO touches, we asked Fox and Hart to provide us with those incredible hand-lettered with laser finish gold acrylic place cards, “surprise” drink stirrers (what other word would do?), welcome signs, and menus.
And, of course no event is complete without a little bit of something to sweeten the deal: that stunning cake and display of desserts were made by the supremely talented The Cake That Ate Paris (and yes, you can bet they tasted just as good as they looked!) We are beyond obsessed with that gorgeous cake topper - WOW WOW WOW!
We all know that it’s just not a celebration without a little bit of festive bubbly, which is why our friends at Yellowglen so generously provided our surprise wedding with sparkling wine and cocktails from their latest collection.
Taking the festivities outside, we created a luxe space where the bride could gift her bridesmaids with gorgeous hampers from Stellar Gifting. The gift boxes contained all the essentials you need to spoil someone – think a blush pink rosé can, a floral soy wax candle, grapefruit + vanilla body polish, and a notebook to jot down all those thoughts!
It’s the ultimate gift to give your bridesmaids for all their hard work (because you had a little help with executing the surprise wedding, of course!)
We think Beautiflora truly outdid themselves with that beautiful suspended floral installation!
We think the arrival is just as important as the exit: we’re kind of, sort of, mildly OBESSED with May the EK. That beautiful vintage car you see before your eyes was front and centre as the getaway vehicle for our newlyweds. The 1962 Holden Special Sedan's dusty pink and chrome highlights added glamour to the day, and will make any wedding day departure one to remember.
That hand-lettered acrylic signage by Fox and Hart that we’ve suspended from the boot just added the finishing touches, don’t you think?
